NON-INDIGENOUS SPECIES

NON-INDIGENOUS SPECIES

Water sampling will be conducted on board ships of opportunity for environmental DNA (eDNA) meta-barcoding. eDNA sampling is an emerging tool used to establish baseline biodiversity in marine coastal areas and to provide early indications of NIS in the Arctic without having to engage in expensive and invasive approaches such as bottom trawl or SCUBA diving. At sites along voyages, we will sample from onboard the ship via a derivation pipe connecting marine cooling water upstream of the engine (the uncontaminated seawater supply), with the water intake located ~5m below the sea surface and using Niskin collections from the same water depth.
